Breaking Down With Jamie Rothenberg

Goodmorning! I’ve been trying not to look at my phone first thing in the AM, so I pick up the book placed precariously next to my bed and read for 20 minutes. I’m currently reading The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. Realizing I’ve lost track of time, I throw on a workout fit and run to my favorite yoga studio for a morning class.
— 7AM
It’s Wednesday, which is my favorite day to visit the Union Square Greenmarket. I read on the train there and drop off my compost before meeting up with my friend, Aimee. We walk around for a bit, grabbing random produce items we need for the week.
— 9AM
I am once again realizing I’ve lost track of time, so I walk over to Librae Bakery to do some work for my day job. I work for a food magazine, doing content marketing (read: social media, newsletter marketing, events, occasionally writing articles… etc). I gave my notice last Friday, and this is my final week at my position before I head out of the country to do some travel. I need to get a lot of things done before my last day, and I enjoy working from cafes. I order a hot chocolate that comes topped with a rose meringue, a hefty piece of focaccia, and a gf chocolate cookie.

— 10AM
I’m getting hungry and don’t want to pay for another meal. I head to Whole Foods to grab some supplies for a freelance gig, then take the train back home to make myself lunch: thrown together leftovers from random meals this week.
— 2PM
Finally done with work, so time to recipe test! One of my favorite olive oil brands reached out to work together on a very exciting project, and I need to finish it before I leave for my trip. I’ve already tested the recipe once, but want to walk through it one more time before shooting content this weekend.
— 6PM
I’m finally done working and I’m pretty hungry. My partner and I decide to cook something easy and delicious: NYTCooking’s White Bean Piccata. We recently got a new dining table, and I like to light candles while we eat. It feels like a very adult table.
— 8PM
Need to shut off my brain, so we watch an episode of Abbot Elementary snuggled on the couch. I always need sweet after savory. Usually we eat these mini vegan chocolate ice cream cones from Trader Joes, but I have leftovers of the recipe I tested earlier and we eat that, instead.
— 9PM
After getting ready for bed, I decide to read again instead of doom scrolling. Replacing my social media addiction with a reading addiction is an effective way of 1) not feeling insane via endless scrolling and 2) reaching my goal of reading 40 books this year. My recent favorite food-adjacent reads: My Year of Meats by Ruth Ozeki, Cooking as Though You Might Cook Again by Danny Licht, and The Cook by Maylis de Kerangal. I pass out mid-chapter, my book falling to the floor, ready for me to swipe back up and read the next morning.
